What is the EMDG?
Australian Government financial assistance provided to exporters by Austrade. Exporters from various industries including tourism, education, traders, IT, services and manufacturing can receive this grant funding for up to eight years. Exporters are entitled to receive up to 50% grant funding for eligible export promotion expenses.
How much money must be spent to receive an EMDG?
Recent rule changes mean there is no minimum spend in order to receive an Export Market Development Grant (EMDG). The grant payment is up to 50% of eligible overseas promotional expenses and is paid as an EFT payment to the business.
What expenses are excluded?
Expenses relating to North Korea, Iran and New Zealand cannot be reimbursed.
Expenses that cannot be substantiated, are non-promotional, or are commission related are also excluded from EMDG applications.
Cash payments of over $10,000 and contentious promotional expenses are also not claimable.
What are the EMDG basic eligibility guidelines?
There are several eligibility guidelines that you must meet to receive an EMDG. These include:
being a registered Australian business with an ABN
having an annual turnover of less than $20 million.
The EMDG program is open to applicants promoting goods, services, tourism services and events, Intellectual Property and know-how. Goods may still be eligible if manufactured offshore, depending on added value factors.
What promotional expenses are claimable under the EMDG?
There are several categories of reimbursement including:
Salaries and related expenses for overseas representatives
Marketing consultant costs
Travel costs for marketing visits
Free samples
Promotion at events and trade shows
Promotional literature and advertising (physical and online)
Overseas buyers
Intellectual property
Eligible travel within Australia.
How do you lodge an EMDG with Sandilands Export?

The application process starts with a ‘plan to market’ submission to be lodged within Austrade’s allocated six-week window. Just let us know when you’d like to begin and we’ll guide you through the process.
What proof is required to support an EMDG claim?
For us to confidently complete your EMDG Sandilands Export will require you to provide us with:
financial statements
information that explains your business and your product or service
evidence of expense including invoices and bank statements
evidence showing the role and function of overseas representatives or consultants
substantiation of marketing visits
reasonable projections of marketing expenses.
